StoryShots Summary and Analysis of Ultralearning: Accelerate Your Career, Master Hard Skills and Outsmart the Competition by Scott Young Scott H. Young’s Perspective Scott Young is a writer and business owner. In 2012, he led his own self-directed education project, where he learned to code in one year. Impressively, he was then able to pass final exams that MIT computer science graduates must pass at the end of their four-year degree programs. Scott Young used open-source computer science lectures available online, along with his own self-organized learning activities and exercises to achieve this. His TEDx talk about his learning approach has been viewed more than half a million times. To further refine his learning methodology, Scott learned four languages in twelve months. He is a graduate of the University of Manitoba and Montpellier Business School. Introduction Ultralearning is a strategy for aggressive, self-directed learning. Self-directed means you can take back control, rather than wait to pay for expensive tuition and tutors. Aggressive means that instead of spending years at something without getting great, your limited time and effort are always directed towards what works. StoryShot #1: Ultralearners Are Quick Learners Ultralearners are people who can learn and acquire new skills in a short time frame. These people must be aggressive and strategic with their learning approaches. An example of this is Eric Barone. Eric was a theater usher who decided to create his own computer game. He was a recent IT graduate who had to compete with huge companies with massive budgets. That said, Barone refined his mechanics over five years by adopting an aggressive trial and improvement approach. Eventually, Barone released Stardew Valley. The game sold over three million copies in its 2016 release year. This monumental sales rate placed him on Forbes’ 30 under 30 list. So, ultralearning can help you stay competitive within the professional world. StoryShot #2: Develop an Optimal Learning Strategy 1. Create a Metalearning Map 2. Use the Map to Identify Challenges 3.
