Episode 19: Humberto Ramirez

The Artish Plunge dives into deep conversation with Vermont-based multimedia artist, curator and professor HUMBERTO RAMIREZ, exploring the unique role of the arts as a language and the challenges —and rewards—of teaching art in an academic setting. Escaping the political and social turmoil in Chile of the 1970s, Humberto came to the US to study molecular biology with an eye towards medical school before he felt the tug to study art. While his early paintings and video often reflected his political and social concerns, he shares how his current work has evolved to reflect his surroundings and stage of life, using space, light and color to create contemplative, abstract botanical fantasies.  Find Humberto: Website:  http://humbertoramirez.net/ Mentioned:The "other" Humberto Ramirez, the jazz musician (hear) Baroque music (learn) Landmark College, Putney VT (learn) Vermont College of Fine Arts, Montpelier, VT (learn) Michel Foucault, French philosopher, The Archaeology of Knowledge: And the Discourse on Language (read)   Panel paintings, Metropolitan Museum of Art (learn) Kaja Silverman, The Subject of Semiotics (read)     Roland Barthes, Mythologies (read) Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art , Mass MoCa (learn) Find Me, Kristy Darnell Battani: Website:    https://www.kristybattani.com Instagram:  kristybattaniart Facebook:  kristybattaniart Did you enjoy this episode?
