S2 Ep5: Diversity, Equity & Inclusion – learning and working for better with Ashanti Bentil-Dhue

In January, I took down our website in response to comments about our partner coaches not being diverse enough to be relevant or to reflect the community that Careering into Motherhood serves. People were absolutely correct and I had made a mistake, for which I am very sorry and I openly admit and talk about on this episode of the podcast. Over the last few weeks I have learnt so much, spoken to so many people all over the world, and as a result it has re-shaped my business. One of the amazing people I spoke to was Ashanti Bentil-Dhue who joins me on this episode of the podcast. Ashanti is the Founder of Good Soil Leaders, a Diversity, an Equity & Inclusion (D,E&I) consultancy. Good Soil Leaders works with businesses going through the kind of journey that I am going through, Ashanti herself talks a lot about contextualising the situation right now and being “learner-ready.” For Careering into Motherhood this episode marks the start of our journey, it will continue, and will probably never end. When we open our doors once again it will not signify that the job is done, but rather that we continue to grow and learn more about the area of D,E&I as a business and as a community of mothers. You can find out more about working with Ashanti and Good Soil Leaders here  You can listen to Ashanti's podcast Confessions of a D,E&I Practitioner here You can join the Careering into Motherhood community here And watch this space for when we open our doors again to provide women with free coaching tools and expertise on our website.

Why do so many of us go careering into motherhood, unaware of just how hard it is to have a meaningful career as well as family commitments? And why don’t men struggle with their careers in the same way? We talk about the rise of flexible jobs and work anywhere policies, executive burnout and the pressure to be “always on,” Government claims that 75% of mothers are in work, and yet there's being in work and there's having a career. If you’ve had a career break, been on maternity leave, want a career change, want to relaunch yourself back into work or just want a happier balance between work and everything else, Careering Into Motherhood is here with practical advice, insightful interviews and real human stories. Jane Johnson helps empower women and negotiate with employers to offer flexible working so they can stay in their careers. She negotiated her own senior role as a job-share, and in 2019 she set up the Careering Into Motherhood Facebook Group to promote discussion around flexible working, the group now has more than 8,000 members and a successful women’s mentoring programme.
