This week on Comes a Time, the one and only George Porter Jr. joins Oteil and Mike for an enriching conversation about his riveting life in music. You’ll hear about why George is proud of the record that he made over quarantine and how the process of making it was different than what he’s used to, George's indoctrination into the world of the Grateful Dead and why his version of “Eyes of the World” is Oteil’s favorite, as well as what it was like to grow up as a musician in New Orleans. You’ll also hear Oteil and George dive deep into the low end as they discuss pocket vs. chops for bassists, the story of how George got sober and never looked back, and why we have a donut shop and George’s father to thank for his masterfully funky bass playing.  George Porter Jr. founded The Meters in 1965 alongside Art Neville, Leo Nocentelli, and Joseph Zigaboo Modeliste. Known as one of the progenitors of funk, The Meters carved their own place in history with syncopated polyrhythms and grooves inherited from New Orleans’ deep African musical roots. They have influenced everyone from Led Zeppelin and Bob Marley to the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Beastie Boys, with Porter’s heavy pockets and fat notes creating the rubbery bass lines behind anthems like “Cissy Strut” and “Just Kissed My Baby.” George’s reputation with The Meters made him a highly coveted session bassist, which has landed him in the studio with David Byrne, Jimmy Buffet, Taj Mahal, and many other legendary artists. Born and raised in the Crescent City, Porter will forever be New Orleans music royalty, and he calls the city home to this day.
