Winy Maas on Dipping the Planet in Green

Winy Maas is constantly looking towards the future and asking the question - what’s next? The co-founder of MVRDV has ideas that are seemingly larger than life, and push the boundaries of our urban potential. His firm is known for projects like Rotterdam's Markthal, Stairs to Kriterion, or the Taipei Twin Towers. reSITE founder Martin Barry spoke with Winy about his recent projects, including the retrofitted abandoned shopping mall close to the Taiwanese city of Tainan that is part of a wider masterplan to rejuvenate the area that includes a circular food market, with a multipurpose roof, used for growing the produce that will be sold below along with the newly opened Tainan Spring. Also discussed are the projects his think-tank, ‘The Why Factory,’ is involved in, the imaginative Green Dip that rethinks what a “green city” can look like, and the Manifesta 13 Biennale that took place this year in Marseille. He is energetic as he is inspiring. Martin was lucky enough to speak with Winy to discuss that question - what’s next. Om Podcasten

"Design and the City" is published by reSITE, a global nonprofit acting to improve the urban environment, about the ways we can use design to make cities more livable and lovable. Cities are the sum of designers, developers, artists, citizens, public officials, entrepreneurs, and the displaced, but rarely do each of these constituencies gather in the same room, let alone speak the same language, and cities suffer for it. reSITE is literally that room. In order to create a city that is truly for everyone, we need to have conversations on how to design and build cities with humans in mind.
