Effectively Increasing the Scope of PLM

You may think that PLM is about tools, processes, and data, but today’s guest understands that effective PLM is much more than that.  PLM is all about people understanding what they are doing with product data and why they’re doing it. Today Craig Brown and Thom Singer are joined by Mark Pendergast, retired Technical Manager and Systems Architect to examine the value of PLM as it relates to people.  Mark shares his experiences with helping companies embrace agile as a process and engaging within the company to increase the scope of PLM where it matters most — with the people.    On today’s podcast, you will learn about: Surprises in PLM PLM is all about people getting their job done every day with the assistance of some technology. Effective adaptation of PLM happens when there is a vision that people can get behind.  Technology is secondary, storytelling is the primary effective approach to adapting PLM.  Convincing management can be the greatest challenge, but it doesn’t have to stop progress.    Pervasive computing and increasing the scope of PLM Embracing a metaphase-based system starts with an increased understanding of the full process.  The more moving pieces there are, the less people tend to understand any of it. Effectively increasing the scope of PLM requires understanding the entire model.  Understanding the flow of data and decisions is critical to company-wide improvement.   Understanding agile as a process Effective agile supports budgets and timelines.  Agile is meant to offer a change in emphasis, not in processes.  Thinking has to shift from feature outcomes to business outcomes.    Customization vs. adaptation Staying current with the commercial marketplace is essential to continued company growth.  Error-proofing happens most effectively with customization.  Customization has to happen with production and information systems.   Career advise from an industry veteran The best employees will take on assignments that will increase your understanding of company products.  Take field trips to understand what the products you are developing do.  Build out your network and leverage it to get things done.
