In this peppy episode we're talking about letting go. It's really easy to take all of the analysis we have done over the last few weeks and spend time making ourselves feel bad about all the things we didn't improve, didn't succeed at or downright sucked at! This is not helpful! So in this episode I will talk a little about how you should take the learnings from last year to apply them constructively to your plans for this year, and then let them go. Once you have learned everything you can from the past there is no need to dwell on it anymore. It's very easy to ruminate, to dwell on our past mistakes, but it doesn't actually help us. It can feel like some sort of appropriate punishment for our 'bad behaviour' but unless we learn from this activity is quite pointless. And once we've learned from our mistakes, dwelling on them is just a waste of time and a fast way to make yourself feel bad! So let the past go, focus on how you're going to move forward positively into the future. My brief reference to Elon Musk's chip in the brain came from an Engoo article I read with a student a while back. https://engoo.com/app/daily-news/article/elon-musk-wants-recruits-to-build-a-brain-computer-interface/EexXwu4hEeqirEePoAH1mQ Vocabulary judgemental - having a point of view that is more critical than necessary constructive - giving some feedback or finding some information that is positive, useful and supportive, helping to improve things for the future one size fits all - this comes from a kind of clothing we can buy 'one size' that is supposed to fit everyone, but it rarely does. So we use this phrase in this way to talk about things that are sold as if they would work for everyone, but actually don't. We are all individual people, why would we expect anything to work for all of us! New Year New You - this is a phrase that has been growing in popularity from America with the self-help movement. It gives this idea that we should change because of the new year. I don't really agree with this, I think it's too big of an expectation, but I do believe in setting yourself up for success, which is what this video is all about. Additional Vocabulary From The Blog Peppy - up beat, comes from the 'pep rallies' in America where the cheerleaders cheer and get the crowd excited and the team motivated for a game. 'Peppy' gives the idea that someone is up-beat, cheerful and full of energy. Downright sucked at - Downright is used as an emphasis word, we use it before another word to emphasise that we were really good or bad at that thing. In this case it emphasises that we were really bad at it. No need to dwell on it anymore - to dwell on something means we think about it all the time and keep thinking about it. We can also use it when someone is talking about a subject again and again. Ruminate - this means to think negative thoughts and to think about the past a lot.
