5 predictions for 2022—artificial intelligence and machine learning will go mainstream

At the start of 2022, we bring you a series of episodes that pull together the five most interesting predictions we found in multiple areas in tech. In this episode, we focus on AI and machine learning, which experts around the world expect will go mainstream and impact multiple industries much more significantly. From manufacturing to human language, in 2022, everything will begin to change in ways that might help us, but also challenge us. Prediction 1: AI and deep learning will go mainstream and physical AI, machine learning and deep learning platforms have entered the mainstream and will attain the same level of maturity as specialised data analytics, Database Trends and Analysis reports. Frameworks like PyTorch and Tensorflow will be vital. In 2022, AI will also likely play a pivotal role in helping us solve real-world challenges—in manufacturing, supply chain and logistics, for example—The Next Web reports. AI will begin to make greater impact in areas including, healthcare, automotive and gaming, according to a blogpost by semiconductor giant Nvidia. Prediction 2: AI for human language will surge GPT-4, a potential new language model, brings with it hopes to dramatically improve natural language AI, according to The Next Web. Auto-generated articles that are indistinguishable from human writing, improved real-time language translation, and meta-learning capabilities are just a few ideas of what may come next. The combination of this kind of human-like capabilities and cloud computing will elevate the advancement of tech in every single industry, he says. Prediction 3: Embedded AI—one in five organisations will invest in ‘AI inside’ During the pandemic, digital natives effectively used ‘AI inside’—AI that’s embedded at the core of everything from architecture to operations—to bridge the business-to-customer divide in areas such as grocery delivery and restaurant supply-chain optimisation, according to researchers at Forrester. In 2022, they expect traditional businesses to adopt this AI-first approach to platform and digital transformation. The more ‘AI inside,’ the more enterprises can shrink the latency between insights, decisions, and results, she says. Prediction 4: AI for Science will take off This area will continue to mature significantly and yield real-world impact, according to the Nvidia blogpost mentioned above. AI will deeply integrate with high-performance computing at supercomputing scale and make scientific simulations and modelling possible at an unprecedented scale and fidelity in areas such as weather and climate models. AI will lead to breakthroughs in discovery of new drugs and treatments and revolutionise healthcare. Federated learning and differential privacy will be widely adopted, making healthcare and other sensitive data-sharing seamless. Prediction 5: Responsible AI—the market for responsible AI solutions will double. Some regulated industries have started adopting responsible AI solutions that help companies turn AI principles such as fairness and transparency into consistent practices, according to the Forrester predictions mentioned earlier. In 2022, Forrester expects the demand for these solutions to extend past these regulated industries to other verticals using AI for critical business operations. With this uptick in adoption, existing machine-learning vendors will acquire specialised responsible AI vendors for bias detection, interpretability, and model lineage capabilities.
