EP#48: Reactivating Memories of Beirut: In conversation with Nour Sokhon

In this week’s episode Isobel chats with the fascinating artist Nour Sokhon about how she uses sound as a medium to share and witness memories of Beirut, the city where she lives and works.Beirut has a troubled recent past with sectarian violence making ‘normal’ life feel increasingly difficult. Nour was born in this vibrant city, and upon returning to Lebanon’s capital city, something fitted into place and she was immediately inspired by the ever shifting soundscape. A prolific artist, Nour has created a host of audio and visual works that explore the complex interplay of memory, trauma, lived experience, hope and human exchange. Tune in to hear how she has used sound in  particular to create these powerful works. Artwork Image: Omar Sfeir----------------Girls Twiddling Knobs is hosted and produced by Isobel Anderson with production support from Jade Bailey and Francesca O’Connor and is a Female DIY Musician Production.EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS{0:00} Intro{04:26} Nour’s experience living in Beirut{10:22} Using music and sound to create lasting memories{17:35} Working with different artistic mediums{22:36} Collaborating with others to create meaningful social change{25:04} Expressing people’s stories of conflict and injustice in her music{48:13} Nour’s hope for the future {52:21} Episode SummaryListen to the episode here.  Listen on Spotify.Join the Girls Twiddling Knobs Podcast Community here >>Find out more about Nour’s practice here >>Learn about the Aug 4th, 2020 blast in Beirut >>Ready to level up your music making with the powerful art of field recording?
