When your kids don’t produce the grades or the effort in your homeschool that you’d like them to, what do you make that mean? Does it send you into a panic or fit of frustration? I mean, this is their future right? Shouldn’t they care more? Shouldn’t they want to be successful in life? We know that they do want to be successful in life, to have a good life, a happy life. But our definition of success and theirs is likely very different. Your definition of success comes from your past, your history, your childhood, and your even your marriage. Their definition of success is coming from you. So if you are valuing what they produce over who they are, then that is what they will likely go out into the world valuing as well. So as you sit down to plan your school year, I want to encourage you to also write out your definition of success. Do this for yourself and for your kids separately, because you’ve likely been owning a lot of your kid’s behavior and efforts as evidence of your own success and, unfortunately that never produces the results you hope for. I also want to encourage you to come listen to me dive more deeply into this topic during this week’s episode of the Happy, Holy Mama Podcast: Defining Success.
