Nellie Bly was just 21 years old when she went ‘undercover’ as a patient at an insane asylum in 1887, shocking the world with her vivid reporting on the horrors she witnessed inside. Many consider Bly’s work, ‘Ten Days In A Madhouse’, the very first example of investigative journalism - no small feat at a time when women were not permitted to be journalists in the first place (unless they agreed to only write about ‘fashion, society and gardening’…).
