A new wrinkle in returning to sports following infection with COVID-19 emerged in recent weeks. There is concern about potential effects of the virus on the heart. With sudden cardiac death in athletes a concern for all of us in sports medicine, any issues that could cause cardiac damage may get your Spidey Sense tingling. On April 24th, a blog in British Journal of Sports Medicine written by two of my guests today, Dr. Kim and Dr. Martinez, as well as a few other prominent physicians in the area of sports cardiology, was published and I believe was the first to call attention to this topic. A recent article from May 13 was then published as a viewpoint in JAMA Cardiology expanding this concern and providing an algorithm with suggestions in evaluation and management for athletes with COVID.  Today’s podcast will touch on these expert opinion recommendations and hope to provide additional clarity as to the level of concern we should have in dealing with our athletes who may have had been infected with COVID-19.
