Injuries can be devastating to an athlete of any age. It typically means loss in many respects… of goals, dreams, aspirations, normal physical activity, interaction with teammates and just being part of a team. Over the years, many tears have been shed in sports medicine offices over a diagnosis that results in that loss. But where does the athlete go from there. What supports do they have? Is there a parent who also expresses disappointment or frustration with the diagnosis, or do they express empathy? How about the coach? How about us as sports medicine professionals? Is this an athlete who holds their identity as an athlete only and the injury has now stripped that leaving that athlete with a perceived loss of identity? All of these things are things to consider. Today on the podcast, I have a very special guest to me. My son. He suffered a sports injury his sophomore year which led to a significant acute decline in his mental health. We are going to discuss his experiences and his story. The Healthy Young Athlete Podcast Links Bar: Subscribe & Interact with Us Now!
