The 7 Emotion Circuits: RAGE, FEAR, GRIEF, LUST, CARE, SEEKING, and PLAY (Jaak Panksepp's theory)

In this episode, we'll delve into the fascinating science of emotions and explore the seven basic emotions that are hypothesized by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp to be produced by separate neural circuits in the brain. According to the Panksepp, each of these emotions has a dedicated system in the subcortical regions of the brains of mammals. By activating these particular regions, a specific and intense emotional experience can be produced. In this video, I explain each of the seven systems, including their basic neuroanatomy and what happens when they're stimulated. From the RAGE system that triggers violent reactions to the PLAY system that's crucial for healthy childhood brain development, we explore the fascinating and complex world of emotions and how they play out in the brain. In a future video, I will explain her theory and how it differs from Panksepp's. -- Chapters: 00:00 Panksepp’s seven basic (“primary-process”) emotions 00:53 The RAGE system 01:34 Caveat: the science of emotions is contentious 02:11 The three levels of emotion according to Panksepp 04:37 The FEAR system 05:15 The GRIEF (or PANIC) system 06:22 The LUST system 07:34 The CARE system 08:45 The PLAY system 09:36 The SEEKING system 10:56 How to support this channel -- References: Panksepp, J., & Biven, L.
