Training for motherhood is essential and this is a great opportunity to hear about the various factors that impact on back pain during pregnancy and what you can proactively do. KEY TAKEAWAYS One of the biggest drivers for back pain during pregnancy is fear. Back pain will get better during pregnancy if it is treated well. During pregnancy, there are biomechanical changes with an increasing frontal load. This makes pregnant women more at risk of falling in later pregnancy. Making sure your body is able to move into and out of neutral postures is important. The more babies you have the more likely you are to experience back pain. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to back pain in subsequent pregnancies including nutrition, fear and insufficient rehabilitation from prior pregnancies transfer of load is not so efficient. There are many drivers to pain so a health professional needs to take a detailed history If you have had a traumatic birth then it’s important to take the time to talk to someone and process it. Make good use of the time after the birth from birth to twelve weeks to process and recover from what’s happened to your body. In pregnancy, structures can become more sensitised causing pain. If you experience transient pain or a decline in function then seek help from a physiotherapist. If you are stressed your breathing is altered and this will affect your pelvic floor. It’s a myth that you shouldn’t exercise when pregnant if you are healthy. BEST MOMENTS ‘Posture is not an indicator for back pain’ ‘We function on our feet so working out how to move better is key’ ‘It’s important to be as active as you can, the more active you are the better it is for your baby’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Back Pain Podcast The Back Pain Podcast recommended products affiliate link Active Pregnancy Foundation Sarah Fellows Instagram ABOUT THE HOSTS Dave Elliot Dave is the owner of Advanced Chiropractic, a chain of Chiropractic and massage therapy clinics in Essex, UK.
