In this episode, I discuss how 2 children’s literature books are examples of ‘Black girl literacy’ (Muhammad & Haddix, 2016) –a teaching framework that is necessary for affirming and empowering the reading and writing identities of Black adolescent girls. This episode provides a context as to why and how teachers can incorporate culturally relevant literacies for Black girls in elementary schools. Some key takeaways are: · I am Enough by Grace Byers and Keturah Bobo is a beautiful, inspiring book that promotes the multiple ways that Black girls can accept and love themselves enough to say and believe that “I am enough”. · “Hair Love” by Matthew Cherry and Vashti Harrison has a very empowering and warm message that promotes family, self-acceptance, quality time, inner and physical beauty, and just plain ol’ love.
