EP 40: Leading with LOV - Black Girl Mentorship, Leadership, and Youth Development Programming with Ms. Jamila Trimuel | CEO, Ladies of Virtue

How can K-12 educators and principals mentor young Black women in their schools and lead them closer towards success? In this podcast, we have an exciting conversation with Ms. Jamila Trimuel, the Founder and CEO of Ladies of Virtue (LOV). Her Chicago-based non-profit organization stands in the gap for Black girls, from ages 9 to 18, who may not have positive role models and need a support system. The main goal of Ladies of Virtue is to mentor, support and prepare girls and young women for leadership in three ways:  character development, career readiness, and civic engagement. We discuss the benefits of young Black women having the access to a mentoring and leadership program that is gender focused and also culturally relevant in their lives. Highlights from this podcast include: ● Research shows that only 39% of Black girls do not have any adverse childhood experiences, compared to 60% of White girls, 49% of Hispanic girls, and 75% of Asian girls who also have not had any adverse childhood experiences.  ● Black girls are viewed as needing less support. ● Mentoring will gradually lead to future success stories. ● Speak life into young women and love on them.
