Big Organ Sounds And Percussion #4 This is a five part series dedicated to electric organs. The title of the series was chosen for two reasons: Firstly, “Organ Sounds And Percussion” is an album by Eddie Layton from 1962. Layton was one of my first great heroes on the electric organ and one of the main reasons I became interested in the instrument. Another significant early influence on my listening habits was Big John Patton. The title is meant as a tribute to those two musicians in appreciation of their work. Secondly, the “percussion”-part is intended to imply that the series deals primarily with popular, rhythmic genres: Jazz, rock, reggae, funk and whatnot. More abstract material - drone, free improvisation, modern composition - is better suited for a separate treatment in my opinion. In terms of the programming, I’ve been guided by two further choices: Firstly, though a few names reappear over the course of the series, I’ve attempted to present as many different artists as possible. Secondly, in #1 - #4 the main focus is on shorter pieces. In #5 emphasis is on longer pieces. Finally, there are many types of electric organs on display here, including sampled and imitated ones. Truth be told, in one track there is no organ whatsoever outside of the lyrics. This is not an academic exercise and I’m no purist. My main purpose has simply been to make a selection that is a continuous joy to listen to throughout. Thanks to Jan Høgh Stricker for the invitation. Thanks to Kasper Vang (#1, #2, #3) and Ryosuke Ueno (#4, #5) for editing and mixing. Thanks to Peter Peter, Chris Cutler and Martin Hoshi Vognsen for helping out. J.
