Just heard Tim Grover say this: Motivation is for people who haven’t decided what they want. Years ago I was in the car with my brother Evan Maeda. We were talking about how much we hate interviews from famous artists that we look up to because they all say the same things: Work hard Believe in yourself Master your craft Although those things are all true, and you should do all of them, they get old. It’s all motivation, and motivation isn’t what gets you to the next level. How do I know? I’ve been “motivated” since I was 17 years old. I’ve learned that your attitude isn’t what gets you results, it’s the actions you take on a day-to-day basis that will. Here’s an example. I notice people in the comments on social media say, “Some people just want to do music for the art. It isn’t about the money.” It isn’t? Then why are you unhappy? Why do you feel like your life isn’t going anywhere? People want to feel happy and blissful and content, but aren’t willing to do what it truly takes to get there. Being motivated means that you WANT more out of your life. I must admit, it is an ingredient in the gasoline that will fuel your vehicle to success, but gas without a car is just gas. Gas isn’t what gets you from point A to point B. Now don’t get me wrong you obviously need motivation otherwise you won’t be inclined to take action, but don’t for one second think that it’s all you need. The other thing to note about motivation, is that it’s so basic that it isn’t even talked about amongst high performers. Saying you’re on a diet because you don’t eat pizza, fast food, and candy ain’t a fucking diet. When you go in for a job interview and the person hiring you wants to know some of your strengths, saying you’re a hard-worker is like saying you can breathe. Nobody wants to hire you if you’re NOT a hard worker. There’s no basketball coach in the world that would recruit someone who isn’t a hard-worker. So stop chasing motivation. Move on! Set up your vision, reverse engineer it, and figure out what you need to do on a day-to-day basis to get there.
