Clare Coulson - Freelance Journalist

Clare writes features and profiles for titles including The Financial Times ‘How To Spend It’, Daily Telegraph, House & Garden, Elle Decoration, Porter, The Evening Standard magazine, Gardenista, Gardens Illustrated and The English Garden magazine. She is also a contributing writer and consultant editor for Blooms (Phaidon 2019); contributing writer for The Garden Chef (Phaidon 2019), The Fashion Book new edition (Phaidon 2020) and Flower (Phaidon 2020). Clare’s episode “Like Theresa may running through wheat fields” What a wonderfully, garden-based chat we had with Clare. It seems Clare’s career could have headed in various directions, she was selling cakes at car boot sales at 11; making her own clothes in her teens and even had a micro-business designing hats for a children’s designer in Mayfair whilst still in sixth form at school. Add to that also a few years travelling and a degree in The History of Art. She started in journalism interning with Hilary Alexander at The Daily Telegraph and worked as a fashion journalist, fashion editor and stylist, before she discovered gardens. She then pivoted her career towards her current world of gardens and garden writing. We discuss garden transformations and gardening during lockdown, including how Clare’s small local nursery delivered much needed orders far and wide, almost worthy of a weekly round of applause in her opinion :) We discover new places to look for seeds and plants and hear about some of Clare’s favourite gardens and favourite plants (extensive list of links to all below!). We may just gloss over the fact that Clare said ‘the dog and the garden are the centre of her world’, without mention of her children - hahaha!
