It's Mother's Day here at the TM Pod. Episode 9 is a conversation between host Jason and his mother M. Michaela Murphy. The story begins with tales of life as an American officer’s kid in occupied post-war Germany where as a young teen when she wasn't swatting old Nazi's or chasing away home invaders she was watching the King of RocknRoll do his thing. She goes on to describe her trouble readjusting to the horrifying reality of life in the Jim Crow South. Along the way she meets some Teddy Boys, who in the episode Jason erroneously describes as being members of 'the first teenage subculture' he meant to say they were members of the first British teenage subculture. All apologies to the Zoot Suiters! We then jump forward to her experiences during Jason's years as a young teen in the thrall of the hardcore punk subculture. Michaela shares her impressions of the live punk experiences she had accompanying him, his friend Erich, and brother Gavin to see seminal US bands like The Circle Jerks, X, Fear and TSOL in Seattle. She also reminisces about learning to appreciate a nice chianti while hosting Italian punks Raw Power for an extended stay under her roof in San Diego. From there the two go on to discuss Michaela's transformative political and spiritual awakenings in the 1970's, her decades long career as a librarian and educator, the nature of being and what it means to live a good and decent life. It's a wide ranging, funny and touching episode, we appreciate her sharing part of her story with us. We hope you enjoy listening as much as we enjoyed making Episode 9. Correction: In the introduction Jason refers to Michaela as a 'First Wave Feminist', when in fact she was a part of the 'Second Wave' Feminist movement of the 60's and 70's. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jason-traeger/support
