Why do you want to build your business? This question is actually really challenging for a lot of people. I ask my clients to work through identifying their why when they work with me inside the Rule Breakers’ Crew, because it is so critical to building an impactful business and to keeping you motivated as you work toward that. But what I find when I first ask my clients why they want to build their business is that after really digging into their motivations they find they are really chasing a desire to prove that they can succeed. The other common motivator is the lifestyle that so many online business influencers (yes, that’s what many of them are) promise is waiting if you just “succeed” in business. Usually it isn’t conscious. People don’t realize that they are preoccupied with proving that they can succeed or with getting the things that they think come with success. But when you really start to think about why you want to build your business, you might find that this preoccupation with success is a big driver. And here is the problem - what we have been taught about success and what we continue to be taught about success is in many ways completely confused. And at the very least, it is pretty rare that the ways we are taught to pursue success actually align with our own motivations, desires, values, or our own vision of what success means to us. In today’s episode I’m going to dig into where we have been steered wrong and really give you some food for thought that I hope allows you to draw your awareness to where you might be sacrificing yourself for success, and where this is misaligned and often counterproductive to your larger goals. If today’s episode feels particularly resonant for you, then I want to invite you to my next free community training on Friday February 11 at 3pm CDT: Transcend Your Dichotomy: Embrace your greatest gifts, increase your impact, and help change the self-sacrifice narrative. You can register by visiting bit.ly/tydlive to save your spot. Here’s a preview of what you can expect from that training, and what we will start to explore in today’s episode. Self sacrifice for the sake of business success has long been a common theme in the business development world. However, the belief that your well being and integrity are a liability to success is likely the very thing hindering your results. I’ll break down how shifting this narrative, first internally, can open the door to more sustainable growth, maximize your impact on your clients, and contribute to ripple-effect-impact as you participate in changing the narrative.
