Indigent is an adjective that means suffering from extreme poverty. The Latin word indigēre (in dee JAIR ay) means ‘to need.’ Our word of the day describes someone who is very much in need. If I had known about Max’s indigent state, I would have offered to help. But his pride prevented him from letting anyone know how much in need he was.
