In conventional medicine, one of the most important and overlooked phenomenon thus far had been the constant communication between the gut and the brain. We now know that most of the immune system is made within the gut. Studies have now deemed the gut the second brain and we know from peer reviewed data that important mood stabilizing neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are made in the gut. This may be why your anti-depressants or anxiety meds may be under performing. Unless the communication between the gut and brain is established with the help of nutrients, probiotics and lifestyle modification, treating gut disorders like depression and mood swings is virtually impossible with medication alone. Note, I called them gut disorders and not cognitive disorders as we were once told. So, why are these mood disorders an extension of gut disorders?
